By now, almost everyone who would care knows about the AIDS trial in Adelaide, Australia. With Justice John Sulan presiding over the appeal trial of Andre Chad Parenzee, defense attorney (solicitor) Kevin Borick QC cross-examined the prosecution's star witness.

Earlier in the trial, two molecular biologists of the Perth Group testified for the defense. Eleni Papadopolous-Eleopolos and Dr Val Turner both have said for years that HIV does not cause AIDS, and probably doesn't exisit as a uniuque pathogen.

Robert C. Gallo, director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, was a witness for the government's case that Andre Chad Parenzeee knowingly put 3 women he had sex with at risk for AIDS.

Mr. Gallo said that Ms Papadopolous-Eleopolos and Dr. Turner's assertions are "nonsense" because the research on which it is based is outdated. If that is the case, could he mean his own research and "discovery" of HIV is outdated and nonsense?

Gallo squirmed on the camera on Monday to a line of questioning about his wrongdoings and ethical breaches in 1984.

The questions were part of a strategy that seemed to discredit popular AIDS science by discrediting the man who invented it.

1984 was the fateful year that Robert Gallo obtained samples of protein particles sent to him by the Pasteur Institute, claimed it was a retrovirus (lentivirus), filed patent applications for very profitable "HIV tests," and later that day held a press conference to say he alone discovered the virus that causes AIDS.

It is said that Mr. Gallo lied, stole, and cheated his way to HIV fame and AIDS-related fortune.

Mr. Borick asked Gallo about the United States Congressional investigation which conculded that there were "misrepresentations relating to the discovery of HIV and the invention of the antibody blood test," that there continued a "cover-up of the misrepresentations," and that the "consequences for HIV research were severely damaging, leading, in part, to a corpus of scientific papers polluted with systematic exaggerations and outright falsehoods of unprecedented proportions."

Mr. Gallo reacted violently to the defense's line of questioning, and via video link told the court that he had been "found not guilty of nothing."

Again referring to the United States congressional inquiry, Mr. Gallo told the court on live video feed from Bethesda, Maryland, "It is not fruitful and it wasn't needed and anybody who read the conclusions knows the story. My integrity is not on trial, Mr Borick."

Gallo also said of HIV / AIDS research: "It is no longer child's play..."

It makes one wonder when it was child's play for Bob Gallo.
